On 2 September 2007 soldiers from 39 Engineer Regiment based in Waterbeach, entered a team into the Brecon Beacon 3 Peaks Challenge in support of the British Heart Foundation. The soldiers were from 60 HQ & Support Squadron and the Regimental REME Workshop.
The BHF are responsible for raising funds for the pioneering research into heart disease which is the UK's biggest single killer in premature deaths.
In preparation for the event, funds were raised through a variety of events including a 'bag-pack' at Asda Cambridge, a stand at the Regimental Open Day and generous sponsorship from families and friends. The team also received large contributions from 39 Engineer Regiment's Corporals' Club and Warrant Officers' & Sergents' Mess; which totalled £1500.
The day of the challenge began at 4.30 am with a hearty fry up. The team then negotiated 12 miles through the rugged Welsh countryside including the infamous Pen Y Fan (c900m). Thankfully the weather was dry and clear throughout giving the team the chance to enjoy the views and brush up on their navigational skills. Exhausted, the team finished in a respectable 3 hours 59 minutes.
The team captain, Sergeant Mullett, who organised the event said "We're already looking forward to taking part next year, but will I be given the map again? Possibly not".
